Music and Sound Resources to Explore
Overview
Like the image websites, some sites include free music and sound resources. Some companies have "free" resources if you sign up for an account at no charge. But beware that your email address and name frequently will likely become part of a marketing list. You are selling your name for free resources. Other companies have " royalty-free resources ," which means you pay a subscription fee to use the entire library for non-commercial purposes. They usually offer sample free music and sound resources to entice you to consider subscribing. Be sure to read the terms. And subscribe to anything that you feel is worth the annual fee.
You can also find music and sound resources through your Internet browser. To search the entire web for a piece of music or sound that you need, use Google's search engine. ( www.google.com ) Enter the keyword for the type of music/sound you want to download. For example, if you type in "cow" plus "sound" (cow + sound) you will now only find sounds of cows rather than all references including text articles.
Music and Sound Web Sites
TIP: Be sure to read the terms of use at any site from which you are taking images or sounds since many require you to include screen credits to the authors or websites as part of your permission to use the resources. It is a good ethical practice to cite and credit ALL sources of any resources you use.
TIP: The file format on the website may visually appear on the screen to be a QuickTime file. However if you click on the far right down triangle for your saving options, you can choose SAVE as SOURCE rather than saving as a QuickTime movie file. Source means the sound saves as an original sound in WAV or AIFF file format.
TIP: If download a file in a format that doesn't import into your video-editing software, use QuickTime Pro to convert the file to a useable format.
TIP: Royalty Free Websites offer many free samplers of sounds and music loops as well as an opportunity to join, order or license an extensive library of sound tracks. It takes time to develop and host these types of resources. Enjoy their freebies but consider purchasing their products for a fully developed copyright friendly resource for yourself, family, school or organization. As long as you are NOT selling your work commercially - purchasing royalty free music/sounds is a great deal!
